AU celebrates a point

WASHINGTON, D.C.Helena Elbaek and Jasmine Ellison each had career-bests in kills to lead American University to a 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20 victory Saturday at George Washington in a match of the D.C. Volleyball Challenge.

Junior libero Kristen Largay had 21 digs to lead four Eagles in double figures in that category. She became the seventh AU player in history to reach 1,000 digs in her career.

The Eagles improved to 2-0 on the young season and return to Bender Arena on Sunday to host No. 1 Stanford at 4 p.m. in the annual Bender Blue Out, presented by the Marines.


• Elbaek, a sophomore outside, led American with 21 kills, marking her first match with 20 or more kills at AU. She had seven kills in the first set and eight in the second, helping to stake the Eagles to a 2-0 lead in sets.

• Ellison, a junior outside hitter, had 15 kills in the match, highlighted by eight in the decisive fourth set when she had eight kills on only nine attempts. Ellison recorded the first double-double of her career, adding 17 digs to her effort. She had 15 kills and only one error in 34 swings, hitting .412 on the night.

• Largay's 21 digs gave her 1,006 for her career and surpassed the 1,000 milestone. It was the 15th time in her career she had 20 or more in a match. Largay had four service aces for the second straight match.

• Senior setter Kennedy Etheridge had 50 assists and matched a career-high with 20 digs, while junior outside Aleksandra Kazala was the fourth Eagle in double-figure digs with 16. Kazala finished with nine kills.

• Loren McKenzie had a team-best six blocks and hit 7-0-15 (.467).

• Skylar Iott led GW with 20 kills and 12 digs, while libero Bella Bowman finished with 31 digs for the Colonials, who fell to 0-2 on the season.


The Eagles return to Bender Arena on Sunday for a 4 p.m. matchup with No. 1-ranked Stanford. The annual Bender Blue Out is presented by the Marines.
