WASHINGTON – American University will honor its volleyball seniors in pregame ceremonies on Sunday when the Eagles close the regular season with a Patriot League match against Bucknell in Bender Arena at 2 p.m.
The Eagles, who have won 15 straight matches, have already clinched the regular-season title and the right to host the PL Tournament, which will be played next Saturday and Sunday. AU is 23-7 overall and 14-1 in league play.
The Bison, who beat Holy Cross in five sets on Friday night, enter Sunday's match at 14-13 overall and 8-7 in the league. Bucknell will not be able to reach the top four teams which qualify for the PL Tournament.
AU's senior class of 2017 includes defensive specialist Hoakalei Dawson and middle blocker Erin Swartz. Since their arrival in 2014, AU has gone 103-29 overall, 59-3 in the Patriot League, won three PL championships and won a NCAA Tournament match against Kentucky.
Dawson was the 2015 Patriot League Libero of the Year and her best match was possibly the Eagles' NCAA victory in 2015 over Kentucky. She is ninth all-time with 815 career digs at AU.
Swartz currently ranks eighth on the career lists in blocks per set and her 1.24 blocks per set as a sophomore in 2015 are third on AU's single-season list. Despite being limited by injuries in her career, she still is listed among the top blockers ever to play for the Eagles.
Also being honored Sunday will be senior manager Chris Brown.
Bucknell is led by sophomore outside Sophie Bullard, who has 2.96 kills per set, and sophomore middle Mimi Richards, who leads the PL with 1.35 blocks per set.
AU won a four-set match in Lewisburg on Oct. 13.
Tickets for all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. General admission seats are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
