EASTON, Pa. – Freshman Helena Elbaek had a team-high 10 kills to lead American University to a 25-16, 25-16, 25-16 sweep over Lafayette in a Patriot League volleyball match on Friday night.
The Eagles, who won their 13th straight match, improved to 21-7 overall and 12-1 in league play. AU maintained its two-game edge in the standings with three matches left in the regular season, as Navy and Army West Point also won on Friday.
Elbaek led the Eagles offense for the third time this season and the first time in a PL match. Aleksandra Kazala finished with eight kills and 10 digs for AU, which got 10 digs from libero Kristen Largay.
Junior setter Kennedy Etheridge had 26 assists, bringing her within five of posting 2,000 assists in her career. American hit .347 on the evening, holding Lafayette to a .136 mark.
Katrina Ruggiero had eight kills to lead the Leopards, who fell to 5-21 overall and 2-11 in league play.
American stays in northeast Pennsylvania Saturday for a 5 p.m. matchup with Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks, who won at Loyola Maryland on Friday, are in a battle for the fourth and final spot in the PL Tournament.
The Eagles return home next weekend for their final weekend of the regular season, hosting Colgate on Friday and Bucknell on Sunday in the last two matches before the Patriot League Tournament is played on Nov. 18 and 19 at the site of the highest seed.
