WASHINGTON – The American University volleyball locker room will be named in honor of Gennaro "Gene" P. Cosco in ceremonies during the Eagles' match with Army West Point on Friday, Oct. 27.
The Cosco family became involved with the American volleyball program when Jen, the daughter of Gene and Jane Cosco, and sister of Lindsay Holt, enrolled at the university in 2002.
Jen came to AU after earning all-state and all-league honors and a New Jersey State championship at Pascack Hills High School. She left the university after earning Patriot League Academic Honor Roll status in all four seasons and graduating among the all-time leaders in digs.
"We are thrilled to have Gene Cosco's name on this special place - as a constant reminder to our players, coaches and administrators that striving for true success only comes when character and compassion lead the way," said AU Head Coach Barry Goldberg. "Gene, Jane and Jen will always be remembered fondly by the myriad of future Eagles who will use this locker room."
Born in Utica, N.Y., Gene was raised on Long Island. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam, where he was awarded two Purple Hearts.
Upon returning home, he attended Hofstra University, where he met his future wife, Jane, and earned a degree in business.
The Coscos are remembered by AU Athletics and the AU volleyball program for raising two bright, strong women in their lively, loving home. Gene was known for his love and admiration for his family, his generous spirit and the actions he undertook throughout his life. Gene had a contagious passion for how hard work and a big heart could make everyone around him better.
Gene passed away in March, 2017. The family's generosity will add to the winning tradition of the program and provide resources for generations to come.
We thank the Cosco family for their generosity in naming the team locker room and ask those who wish to name individual lockers in recognition of Gene and the Cosco family, to contact the American University Department of Athletics at 202-885-3025.
