CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - American University middle blocker Vela McBride was selected as the Patriot League Player of the Week after helping the Eagles to two crucial volleyball victories last week.

McBride had 14 kills with no errors in 18 attempts in AU's five-set win over Navy that included a monstrous comeback from two sets down. McBride, a sophomore from Reston, Va., hit .710 and had 11 blocks for the week, also helping the Eagles to a three-set sweep at Loyola Maryland.

The award is the first Player of the Week honor for McBride, who was the PL Rookie of the Year in 2016. It also is the third time this season an Eagle has won the Player of the Week award, with junior outside Aleksandra Kazala earning the honor twice thus far.

Colgate freshman Alli Lowe was the PL Rookie of the Week, averaging 5.29 kills per set in helping the Raiders to wins over Bucknell and Lehigh.

American hosts a pair of Patriot League matches at Bender Arena this week. The first-place Eagles host second-place Army West Point at 7 p.m. on Friday, and face Holy Cross at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Tickets to all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. General admission seats are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
