WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala and Shannon Webb finished with 12 kills apiece to lift American University to its sixth straight victory in a 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 win over George Washington in a non-conference volleyball match on Wednesday.
The Eagles improved to 14-7 with the victory, while GW fell to 6-15 overall.
Sophomore libero Kristen Largay had 13 digs and three aces for AU, which got six digs, four blocks and two aces in an all-around effort from Dawson. Vela McBride had five kills and five blocks for the Eagles.
Marianna Warren had nine kills to lead GW, which had head coach Sarah Bernson return to the Bender Arena sideline where she spent five years as an assistant coach for the Eagles.
The Eagles used a four-point run to take a 16-12 lead in the first set. GW came within 16-15, but couldn't pull even thereafter and an ace by Webb finished the set.
Orsi had six kills in a strong second set that had AU hitting .519. A 6-1 rally put the Eagles ahead 12-6 and they extended the lead through the remainder of the second set.
The Eagles held leads of 5-1, 11-5 and 17-7 on their way to the final-set victory, completed after the Colonials held off four match points.
American takes to the road for a pair of Patriot League matches this weekend, playing at Bucknell on Friday and at Colgate on Saturday. The Eagles' next home match is on Friday, Oct. 20 when they host league-leading Navy at 7 p.m.
