WASHINGTON – Helena Elbaek and Meaghan Donahue had nine kills apiece to lead American University to a 25-10, 25-9, 25-15 victory over Delaware State on Wednesday in a non-conference volleyball match at Bender Arena.
The victory lifted the Eagles to their third straight win and fifth in the last six matches, improving their overall record to 11-7. The Hornets fell to 0-16 overall this season.
American hit a season-high .449, committing only six attack errors the entire match.
Elbaek had nine kills and one error in 11 attacks, with Donahue hitting at a 9-1-19 pace. It was the first time this season that Donahue led the team in kills. She also had seven digs and three service aces on the evening.
Sabina Szmajduch led Delaware State with eight kills, and libero Alliyah McBean had 10 digs.
AU used a seven-point run to take a 13-2 lead in the first set. The Eagles extended the lead to 17-6 and 22-7 before rolling to the win.
American's leads in the second set were 5-1, 10-3 and 20-7 before finishing off the victory.
The Hornets made a late run to pull within 20-14 before kills from Hoakalei Dawson and an ace from Donahue on match point finished the victory.
American continues its homestand on Friday at 7 p.m. with a match against Patriot League co-leader Lehigh. The Eagles are 3-1 in PL play, a game behind the Mountain Hawks and Navy. The Eagles also play at home at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Lafayette.
