Eagles Swept by Chanticleers, 3-0

Vela McBride hits from the middle

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Helena Elbaek led American University with 19 kills, but Coastal Carolina earned a 25-22, 25-18, 25-18 victory over the Eagles in the second day of the Spartan Spiketacular volleyball tournament hosted by UNC Greensboro.

The Eagles evened their record at 5-5 overall, with the Chanticleers also hitting .500 with a 3-3 mark following the win.

Elbaek, a freshman from Denmark, posted her first match as an Eagle with double-figure kills with 13 in Friday's five-set loss to the host Spartans. She had eight in the second set alone on Saturday.

Fellow freshman Olivia Wassner had 34 assists for the Eagles, who had 11 digs from libero Kristen Largay and three blocks and six kills from junior transfer Cheyenne Orsi.

Leah Hardeman had 14 kills for Coastal Carolina.

For AU, regular starters Aleksandra Kazala, Vela McBride and Kennedy Etheridge did not play in the match.

"This match gave us an opportunity to look at some different lineup options against a good NCAA tournament caliber team," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg. "Helena emerged as a strong outside attacker in the match and we were pleased to see her continue to make progress.
"The league matches begin in a couple of weeks, and we have yet to compete on a weekend at full strength. Hopefully, most all of our group will be available for the opening Patriot League matches."

American returns home next weekend to play in the American Volleyball Classic. The Eagles open competition at Bender Arena on Friday when they play host to Princeton at 7 p.m.

AU will host Iowa at 10 a.m. and Howard at 7 p.m. on Saturday. In other tournament matches at Bender on Saturday, Princeton faces Howard at noon, with the Tigers playing Iowa at 5 p.m.

Tickets for all AU home volleyball matches are available at the Bender Arena Box Office. Seats are all general admission and are $8 for adults and $5 for children. AU students are admitted free with a valid student ID.
