WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Sochacka had a season-high 12 kills as American University swept Holy Cross at home Friday night, 25-15, 25-12, 25-13, in a Patriot League volleyball match.
It was the 699th career win for head coach Barry Goldberg, who will look to become the 14th active Division I coach and the 24th D-I coach all-time to hit the 700-win milestone on Saturday.
The Eagles remained undefeated in Patriot League play at 12-0, and now are 22-6 overall after extending their winning streak to 12 matches.
The Crusaders fell to 6-18 overall, 2-9 in the league.
Sochacka put up an impressive four kills and zero errors in each of the first two sets to lead the team for the first time this season. Aleksandra Kazala was just behind with 11 kills during the match.
Freshman libero Kristen Largay had a team-high 16 digs, and sophomore Kennedy Etheridge led with 30 assists for AU.
American went to early leads of 4-1, 9-4 and 11-5 in the first set. The advantage grew to 20-11 and the Eagles stayed in control the rest of the way.
Kazala got rolling in the second set as the Eagles again led early. It was 12-6 when the Eagles went on an 8-1 run and they kept a double-digit lead to the end of the set. AU hit .778 as a team in the second set (16-2-18).
AU again rolled early, taking an 8-1 lead in the third. The Crusaders pulled back within 11-7, but that was as close as they came down the stretch.
The Eagles return to Bender Arena on Saturday for the potentially historical matchup against Army West Point.
This is the second time AU will face Army this season after the Eagles put up a three-set sweep over the Black Knights on Sept. 30. Army is in third place in the league with an 8-3 record after defeating Loyola Maryland in three sets on Friday.
Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., and will also serve as Halloween theme day at Bender Arena. Fans are invited to come dressed in their Halloween costumes, and there will be trick-or-treating for children after the game.
