WASHINGTON – This weekend could be about milestones, streaks and postseason for American University Volleyball, as the Eagles play host to Holy Cross on Friday at 7 p.m. and to Army West Point on Saturday at 4 p.m.
AU head coach Barry Goldberg is a pair of victories away from 700 in his illustrious career. Goldberg is now in his 28th year with the Eagles and could become the 14th active Division I coach and the 24th NCAA Division I coach all-time to reach the 700-win milestone.
The Eagles are 21-6 overall and a perfect 11-0 in the Patriot League. American has a 2 1/2-game lead over Colgate with five matches remaining. The Eagles could clinch a berth in the PL Tournament with a pair of wins this weekend.
Freshman Shannon Webb has been hot lately, earning Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors for the second time last Monday. Webb led the Eagles with 18 kills and no attack errors in a sweep at Navy on Tuesday.
Sophomore outside Aleksandra Kazala remains atop AU's offensive chart with a 4.34 kills-per-set average. She has led or tied for the team-lead in kills 22 times in AU's 27 matches this year. Sophomore Kennedy Etheridge leads the PL with 9.96 assists per set.
Holy Cross is 6-17 overall and tied for sixth place in the Patriot League with a 2-8 mark. Senior outside Mandy Sifferlen leads the PL in kills with 4.75 per set. Freshman setter Lizzie Webb averages 8.67 assists per set.
American swept the first meeting between the teams, winning 25-20, 25-19, 25-21 in Worcester, Mass., on Oct. 1.
Army West Point is in third place in the league with a 7-3 record, one of five teams battling for the four berths in the Patriot League Tournament (Nov. 19 & 20 hosted by the highest-seed). The Eagles swept the Black Knights, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 earlier this season.
Freshman Allie Strong leads Army with a 2.74 kills/set average, with juniors Vanessa Wesley and Amber Clay also having at least 200 kills this season. Freshman Haven Bethune (8.60 assists/set) is the Army setter.
