WASHINGTON – It was exactly the week that American University's volleyball team needed.
Facing a dangerous Navy squad, and a pair of teams in Lehigh and Colgate that were in second place when they came to Bender Arena, the Eagles were able to win all three matches over the week and emerge with a two-game lead in the Patriot League standings.
One important factor in those three wins was the play of freshman Vela McBride, who earned selection as the GEICO–AU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending Monday, Oct. 10.
McBride, who was also the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, had double-digits in kills in two of those three wins, while hitting .333 or better in each match. She had a career-best 14 kills and hit .684 in a four-set win over Navy and had 10 kills and a pair of aces on Saturday against Colgate.
The freshman middle blocker from Reston, Va., is AU's second Rookie of the Week honoree this year, with Shannon Webb winning earlier in the season.
Sophomore outside Aleksandra Kazala received honorable mention from the league this week and is the other Eagle volleyball player to have earned the GEICO weekly award this season.
The Eagles are on the road on Friday evening to face Loyola Maryland in the final match of the first half of the PL schedule.
