WASHINGTON – Aleksandra Kazala and Vela McBride finished with 10 kills apiece to lift American to a 25-18, 25-23, 25-20 victory over Colgate in a Patriot League volleyball matchup between first- and second-place teams on Saturday.
The Eagles improved to 17-6 after winning their eighth straight and 11th in their last 12 matches. American is now 7-0 in the PL standings and holds a two-game edge over the rest of the league.
The Raiders fell to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in the PL.
Kennedy Etheridge had 31 assists and Kristen Largay finished with a team-high 12 digs for the Eagles, who got three blocks each from Loren McKenzie and McBride.
McBride's 10 kills gave her double figures for the second time in three matches and she led or tied for the team lead in kills for the first time this season.
Katie Stansbury had nine kills to lead Colgate, which got seven blocks from Jaelah Hutchison.
AU held leads of 5-1, 8-3 and 14-7 on its way to controlling the first set. The Raiders came within 16-10, but could get no closer down the stretch.
Colgate led 8-1 in the second set before the Eagles climbed back. AU finally pulled even at 19-19 and gained a 23-20 edge. The Raiders pulled within one point twice afterwards, but a kill from Kazala closed the set.
The last of four ties in the third set came at 12-12 when the Eagles got going. It was 15-14 when AU went on a run that would eventually close the set, finishing the sweep on a kill from McBride.
AU plays its next four matches on the road, starting Friday, Oct. 14 at Loyola Maryland. The Eagles' next home match is Friday, Oct. 28 against Holy Cross.
