WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Aleksandra Kazala led American with 12 kills and 10 digs to lift the Eagles to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of a Patriot League volleyball match at Army West Point on Friday.
The Eagles, who have won four straight and seven of their last eight matches despite being down to eight healthy players, improved to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in the league.
The Black Knights fell to 10-7 overall and suffered their first PL loss in three matches.
AU stayed a half-game behind Lehigh in the Patriot League standings on Friday. The Mountain Hawks won a four-set match at home with Bucknell to improve to 4-0.
Sophomore Kennedy Etheridge had 33 assists and 13 digs, joining Kazala with a double-double in the match. Four Eagles had double figures in digs, including 13 from freshman Shannon Webb and 10 from freshman Kristen Largay.
"I think our team played well from start to finish," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg. "All three of our sophomores were really good leaders. The freshman all contributed for a tough win on the road at Army. It was overall a great team effort."
Junior middle Loren McKenzie had six blocks and freshman Vela McBride added five, as AU finished with 11 team blocks, leading to 18 attack errors by Army West Point.
American used a 6-1 run in the middle of the firs set to take a 16-11 lead. The Eagles' advantage was never less than four points through the rest of the set.
The last of seven ties in the second set came at 13-13 when two straight blocks by McBride and freshman Aleksandra Sochacka pushed the Eagles ahead 17-13. The Black Knights pulled within 18-16 before AU went on a four-point run and went on to close out the set.
Army West Point led 7-6 in the final set when the Eagles got going. The AU lead was 18-17 when a four-point run pushed the Eagles to a lead they carried to the victory.
American travels to Holy Cross for a match on Saturday at 4 p.m.
