DANBURY, Conn. - American University volleyball senior Monika Smidova has been selected to the 2015 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Volleyball All-Star first team, the organization announced on Thursday.
The award is the latest in a strong of accolades for Smidova, who was tabbed an honorable mention All-American by the AVCA earlier this week. It marks the third ECAC All-Star honor of her career.
A native of Plzen, Czech Republic, Smidova closes out her career with the Eagles as one of the most successful players in program history. This season, she earned her second straight Patriot League Player of the Year award, while receiving PL Setter of the Year and PL Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for the third year in a row.
A unanimous first-team All-Patriot League selection, Smidova averaged 9.93 assists, 3.02 digs, 1.40 kills, 0.63 blocks and 0.43 service aces per set in 2015. She ended her career at AU ranked third in both career assists (4,055) and career digs (1,272) and became the first player in program history to total over 4,000 assists, 1,000 digs, 500 kills and 200 blocks.
Also honored on Thursday was American head coach Barry Goldberg, who was voted as the 2015 ECAC Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to a 28-7 overall record, including an 18-0 mark against Patriot League competition.
AU captured its 13th tournament title in 15 seasons in the Patriot League, while also scoring a significant upset in the NCAA Tournament, defeating 22nd-ranked Kentucky in straight sets.
