AU Completes Perfect Patriot League Season at 16-0

WASHINGTONAllison Cappellino led American with eight kills, one of five Eagle seniors honored in pregame ceremonies as AU completed a perfect Patriot League volleyball slate with a 25-21, 25-10, 25-15 win over Loyola Maryland on Friday night.

The Eagles improved to 25-6 overall and 16-0 after extending a winning streak to eight matches and 16 of their last 17.

The perfect league mark was American's seventh since joining the PL in 2001, and the Eagles became the first team in PL history to get as many as 16 league victories.

The Greyhounds fell to 6-24 overall and 1-14 in the league.

American got seven kills from freshman Aleksandra Kazala. Sophomore libero Hoakalei Dawson led the defensive sheet with nine digs and senior setter Monika Smidova handed out 28 assists for the Eagles.

"We're still working and we'd better keep improving if we want to keep playing," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg. "This is the time of the season that you need to be ready for your next match if you want to keep advancing. Every match now, we've got to have our best."

Senior Kristyna Lindovska had a season-high five service aces, pacing the 11 the Eagles had in the match. Megi Dervishi (five kills) and Sarah Katz (four) were the other seniors honored in AU's final regular-season home match.

"These seniors have been through a lot," said Goldberg. "They were part of us making history by reaching the Sweet Sixteen two years ago. It's been a fabulous group.

"But we need to stay in the moment, so we can keep playing as long as we can with them."

Freshman middle Haley Puddy had eight kills to lead the Greyhounds.

There were eight ties and three lead changes in the first set as Loyola started strong. The Eagles got four points on Lindovska's serve late to take a 21-17 lead and went on to earn the win.

American streaked to leads of 7-1, 11-2 and 16-3 on its way to the 25-10 victory in the second set.

In the third set, Loyola was within 11-10 when the Eagles went on a four-point run. The Greyhounds never got closer than 15-12 the rest of the way.

The Eagles will host the Patriot League Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22 at Bender Arena. Final pairings will be determined with matches this weekend.
