WASHINGTON – Just one victory away from finishing the year with a perfect record in Patriot League competition, the American University volleyball team wraps up its regular season on Friday with a 7 p.m. match versus Loyola Maryland.
The Eagles have already clinched the Patriot League regular-season title for the 13th time in the past 15 seasons, entering Friday's match with a 24-6 overall record and 15-0 mark in league action.
With a win over Loyola Maryland, American would post a perfect record in PL competition for the seventh time and the first since 2010. The Eagles would also become the first team in PL history to record 16 regular-season league victories.
Prior to Friday's match, the Eagles will honor the five members of its senior class—Allison Cappellino, Megi Dervishi, Sarah Katz, Kristyna Lindovska and Monika Smidova.
American defeated both of its opponents in league action last weekend, earning straight-set victories over Lehigh and Colgate. Lindovska, who surpassed 1,000 kills for her career during the Lehigh match, totaled 19 kills and 27 digs for the weekend to earn Molten Patriot League Player of the Week honors.
Among the leaders for American this season is Cappellino, who averages a team-best 3.30 kills per set, along with 2.73 digs per set. Lindovska adds 2.55 kills per set, while Smidova averages 9.99 assists and 3.06 digs per set. In addition, sophomore libero Hoakalei Dawson leads the team with 3.79 digs per set.
Loyola Maryland enters Friday's match with a 6-23 overall record and 1-13 mark in league play. The Greyhounds have dropped 10 matches in a row, including a pair of straight-set losses to Bucknell and Colgate last weekend.
Sophomore Stacey Kazalas leads the Greyhounds with 2.93 kills and 2.02 digs per set. Sophomore Molly Cichosz and freshman Haley Puddy add 2.91 and 2.42 kills per set, respectively, while junior Micah Duzey averages a team-best 3.55 digs per set.
