Bernson Named Assistant Volleyball Coach

American University Head Volleyball Coach Barry Goldberg has announced the hiring of Sarah Bernson as an assistant coach. Bernson brings over 12 years of combined coaching experience to American and was the head coach at Cornell University for the past three seasons.

"We are very pleased to have Sarah join our staff," said Goldberg. "Her head coaching experience is a huge asset to our program and we are excited about the contributions she will make in the coming season."

Bernson served as an assistant coach at Cornell for five seasons before taking over the head coaching position in 2009. In her time at Cornell, she helped develop 19 All-Ivy performers and helped the program to Ivy League titles in 2004, 2005 and 2006, with two NCAA Tournament appearances. She also was in charge of recruting and worked with the program's first All-American in school history and all-time kills leader. From 2001-2004, Bernson served as an assistant coach at California State University at Monterey Bay and was responsible for recruiting and technical skills training. She also created and ran the Monterey Volleyball Club, a youth development program geared to middle school and high school student-athletes.

Bernson played volleyball at the collegiate level at Saint Mary's (Calif.) and was named team captain during her senior season. Bernson also coached the Albuquerque Elite and Lamorinda Volleyball Clubs while in college, and helped lead Albuquerque to regional titles.

Bernson graduated from Saint Mary's (Calif.) in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in English and art.
