PHILADELPHIA - American University women's lacrosse wrapped up the regular season 8-8 after losing to Drexel 15-4 on Tuesday evening in Philadelphia.
Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week Jackie Lane (North Massapequa, N.Y./Plainedge) opened the scoring gates and gave American an early 1-0 advantage just less than four minutes into the game. Drexel answered with two goals of its own, took the lead with 12:53 remaining in the first half and hung on to it from there, going on to win by 11.
Kira Sonberg (Millersville, Md./Old Mill), Caitlin Bell (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) and Stefanie D'Andrea (Carversville, Pa./S.H. Calhoun) registered the other three goals for the Eagles, with Lauren Aksionoff (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) recording two assists and Lane chipping in one of her own. The Dragons were led by Kerry Kelly's game-high eight points and Emily Hoesch's three goals and three assists.
Drexel University outshot the Eagles 41-19, with Goalkeeper Kristine Vida (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) making 12 saves on the day. The Dragons also held AU to a season-low four goals.
American University women's lacrosse wraps up regular season play 8-8 overall and 3-2 in the Patriot League. The Eagles return to action this weekend for the PL Tournament. In the first round of the tourney, AU will face second-place Lehigh on April 28. In the other semifinal match-up, No. 1 Holy Cross will play host to fourth place Colgate.
