TOWSON, Md. - The American University women's lacrosse team on Wednesday opened its 2005 season at 18th-ranked Towson with a 16-6 loss.
Towson, ranked in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association preseason poll for the first time in school history, took control of the game early and never looked back. The Tigers scored the games first 13 goals, including two in the first minute of the game. American did not score until the 18:57 mark of the second half on a tally by junior Moriah Linnell (Antrim, N.H./Contoocook). However, Towson scored next to take a 14-1 lead.
The Eagles strung together five straight goals between 10:34 and 3:02 of the second period, including two by Sarah Milewski (Brookhaven, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) and the first collegiate goals by Caitlin Bell (Flourtown, Pa./Springfield) and Brittany Finnegan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), but the Tigers rounded out the scoring with two goals by Becky Trumbo. Trumbo's goals gave her eight tallies on the day, tying her for game-scoring lead with Amy Middleton, who had four goals and four assists.
Linnell finished with two goals and an assist. Milewski had two goals, while goaltender Kathleen Finnegan (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) finished with 10 saves.
