WASHINGTON - Nine Eagles scored to lead the American University women's lacrosse team to its second home win of the season, overcoming Old Dominion on Tuesday, 17-12.
AU bumps up to 2-4 overall this season while the Monarchs fall to 1-3.
Senior Leah Brennan earned her first career hat trick to lead the Eagles with four goals while freshman Emma Vinall followed with a hat trick of her own, fourth of the season, with three goals. Freshman Peyton Smith and sophomores Izabella Jade and Amanda Medjid contributed two each while sophomores Casey Harkins and Erica Skowron, freshman Kendall Goldblum, and senior Lexi Perez each added one.
Skowron added a team-high three assists to lead with four points for the day, while Harkins, Jade, and Medjid each tallied one assist.
Brennan also led the team with six draw controls, followed by five from Vinall, while Medjid and junior Casey Aguilar-Gervase each picked up a team-high three ground balls.
Junior goalkeeper Fiona Geier brought down 11 saves off 23 shots for a .478 save percentage and picked up a pair of ground balls.
The Eagles led ODU in draw controls (16-13) and ground balls (16-14) but gave up 20 turnovers to the Monarchs' 14. Both teams were 50 percent in free position shots, with ODU shooting 3-for-6 and AU 2-for-4.
The Monarchs were led by a five-goal effort from Sophia Richie. Cydney Tutchton and Glory Johnson contributed two each, followed by one from Natalie Ledwitz, Claire Porter, and Lindsay Baer. ODU split time in the cage between Lauren Ey and MaryCate Markey. Ey led the pair with five saves off of 19 shots in just under 35 minutes of play, while Markey put up three saves against six shots.
The Eagles took an early lead after a free position goal from Brennan started the day's scoring in the third minute. Vinall added two more in the next three minutes, both assisted by Skowron, to build a three-goal gap before a pair from ODU's Richie cut the lead down to one at 3-2. Richie hit two more before the 15-minute mark in the first half, but Jade and Medjid both responded with goals of their own to maintain the Eagles' two-point cushion.
Back-to-back ODU goals gave the Monarchs their first lead of the game at 6-5 with 13 minutes left in the half, but Smith tied the game off an assist from Jade, who followed up with a goal of her own to retake a 7-6 lead. ODU picked up its second and final lead of the contest after a pair of goals from Johnson and Baer brought the score up to 8-7, but three goals from Brennan and one by Goldblum closed the half with the Eagles back up, 11-9.
It was all American in the second half, as AU outscored ODU 6-3 in the final 30 minutes, including a 5-0 run in the first 10 minutes. Six Eagles contributed to the second-half tally as Smith, Perez, Vinall, Skowron, Medjid, and Harkins all expanded American's final lead to five by the final whistle.
