HAMILTON, N.Y. - The American University lacrosse team fell in its first Patriot League contest of the season after a late run from Colgate pulled the Raiders to a 15-6 win during the snowy Saturday contest.
The Eagles are now 2-6 overall for the season, 0-1 in conference play, while Colgate rises to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the PL.
American put points up on the board early, starting with a quick goal from senior Madison Hoon straight off the draw in the first 20 seconds of play. Colgate responded less than two minutes later with a goal of their own from Isabel Kreitler, but the Eagles put away a pair of shots from sophomore Brooke Stapleton and senior Sarah Bootman to take a two-point lead midway through the first half, 3-1.
The Raiders closed the half with a 3-1 run to take a 5-4 lead heading into the locker room. That lead would continue to grow throughout the final 30 minutes of the game after they put away 10 goals in the second half to the Eagles' two.
Freshman Erica Skowron led AU for the third time in her career, putting away a pair of goals for a two-point day. Freshman Izabella Lopez, Hoon, Bootman and Stapleton each contributed one goal to close out the Eagles' scoring. Hoon also pulled down a team-high four draw controls, while Stapleton led with four ground balls.
The Raiders were led by a four-goal effort from Isabel Kreitler, and three goals from Kristen Brigagliano. Tara Atkinson, Haley O'Hanlon and Payton Gabriel added two each, while Natalie Washuta and Kate Kelly contributed one apiece.
American will return home next weekend for a 1 p.m. contest against Lehigh on Saturday, March 25. For the latest on AU Lacrosse, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_Lacrosse.
