WASHINGTON – Led by a career-high eight points by senior captain Olivia Mangan, the American University lacrosse team picked up a 15-12 victory against Saint Joseph's on Saturday afternoon at Jacobs Field.
With the win, the Eagles improved to 1-2 on the season, while the Hawks fell to 0-1.
Mangan finished with three goals and a career-best five assists to lead American's offense, while classmate Terese Buechli added four goals and an assist. Additionally, senior Jessica Wojciechowski and sophomore Jennifer DeSimone registered two goals and two assists each for the Eagles.
For the Hawks, Nora McCallion finished with a game-high seven goals, while Sarah Smith added three goals and an assist.
Saint Joseph's was the first to get on the board, tallying its first goal with a free-position shot less than two minutes into the contest. While American responded with four straight scores to take a 4-1 lead with 19:24 on the clock, the Hawks closed out the first half on a 5-2 run, with all five goals coming from McCallion.
The Eagles scored two goals in the first five minutes of the second half to pull back ahead and stayed on top for the remainder of the game, boosted by a 5-1 run midway through the period.
American led by as many as five goals late in the game before Saint Joseph's tallied two scores in the final 65 seconds to account for the final margin.
"This was a great team win, avenging our triple-overtime loss to them last year," said American head coach Emma Wallace. "Olivia Mangan led the offense with eight points and (sophomore) Allie Sale had a huge impact on defense today.
"We will continue to clean up our little mistakes and we look forward to playing a complete game."
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 24, when they visit UMBC in a 3:00 p.m. contest.
