WASHINGTON - American University field hockey player Heidi Hershberger (Davis, Calif./Davis) has been selected to the 2007 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday.
Hershberger has already received her Bachelor's degree after completing her undergraduate coursework in three years with magna cum laude status. She is now working on her Master's in International Affairs: Foreign Policy. In 2007, the forward was named the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year, represented American on the NFHCA National Academic Squad for the fourth straight season and earned a spot on the PL Academic Honor Roll for the fourth consecutive year. As a whole, American University women's field hockey finished second in the nation in the NFHCA Top team GPA Award.
The Davis, Calif., native started in all 21 games for the Eagles this season, who won their fourth-consecutive Patriot League Championship. The forward had 23 points on 11 goals and one assist. Additionally, Hershberger was named Second-Team All-Patriot League and First-Team NFHCA All-Region in 2006.
Hershberger was selected from 85 student-athletes nominated in the women's at-large category. The women's at-large program includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis and water polo.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00 and the athlete must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at her institution.
As a First Team Academic All-District Selection, Hershberger is automatically nominated for the Academic All-America Team which will be released in the upcoming weeks.
