WASHINGTON - The No. 17 American University Field Hockey squad earned their twenty-fifth consecutive win in Patriot League play on Saturday when they defeated Lafayette College, 2-0.
With neither team recording shots in the first 10 minutes of play, Heidi Hershberger (Davis, Calif./Davis) stepped it up a notch and put the Eagles on the board. After challenging several defenders, Hershberger weaved her way through the circle and netted a shot just past Leopard goalkeeper Jill Lambert (Newtown Square, Pa./Shipley School). Hershberger recorded her eighth goal of the season and leads the team in game-winning goals with four.
Just three minutes before half, Denise Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) expanded American's lead to two by capitalizing on a penalty corner. Anne-Meike De Wiljes faked the pass to Infante and slotted the ball to senior Camila Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) instead. Camila Infante sent a pass driving through the circle with her sister on the receiving end. Using sharp stickwork, Infante battled her way through and found the back of the goal to complete the first stanza.
AU continued to play solid defense for the remainder of the game, allowing Lafayette just one opportunity to get in the books. This was first time in the 2006 season the Eagles held their opponent to just one shot in the full seventy minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman (New Britain, Pa./Central Bucks South) recorded her first shutout as an American University athlete.
With this win, AU has extended its Patriot League streak to twenty-five consecutive wins and moves to 10-4-0 on the season. The Eagles return to action Oct. 18 when they travel to their previous stomping grounds of College Park, Md. in a battle against the No. 1 ranked Terrapins.
