WASHINGTON - Goals by Tiffany Carter (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School of Princeton) and Jesika Pufnock (Reading, Pa./Exeter) led the No. 15 American University field hockey squad to a 2-0 victory over Bucknell on Saturday at the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex.
After both teams started out slow, with the weather conditions being a factor, AU's offensive unit stepped it up, pressured the Bison's defense and recorded 14 shots on the day, splitting the stanzas with seven each.
Just before the ten-minute mark, Eagles' defender Denise Infante (Santiago, Chile/Santiago College) weaved between multiple Bucknell defenders, entered the offensive zone, and found herself open in the circle. Using excellent stickwork, Infante forced Bison defenders to attack, leaving Carter open on the far-post. Infante slotted the pass and Carter capitalized on the opportunity, netting a one-time shot past Bison goaltender Emily Groendyke (Glen Gardner, N.J./Voorhees).
AU continued to play solid for the remainder of the half, posting three shots on goal and preventing Bucknell from any attempts to equalize.
Down by one to start the second stanza, the Bison came out strong, and recorded their first two shots of the game within minutes of the whistle. They did not let down, and continued to pressure the Eagles for the remainder of the half.
Bucknell's best opportunities to tie the match came with under ten minutes remaining, both on fouls called against American. The Bison did not hesitate to create scoring opportunities, first shooting just wide of the goal and then forcing Allison Fayfich (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) to make a diving save to keep the shutout alive.
American University answered to these close calls by putting tremendous pressure on Groendyke and the Bucknell defense, securing the win with just three minutes left in the game. After consecutive shots on goal, Eagles' attack player Jesika Pufnock found the hole and slotted the last goal of the match.
Fayfich recorded her third shutout of the season, and tallied three saves on the day. AU outshot the Bison 14-4 to remain undefeated in the Patriot League.
American moves to 9-4-0 on the season, and returns to action Oct. 14 when it hosts Lafayette at 12 p.m.
