GILBERT, Ariz. – Fifteen members of the American University field hockey team were recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) on Monday, March 18, as members of the 2018 Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad.
The Division I National Academic Squad program honors student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2018-19 academic year.
A total of 940 student-athletes from across the country were selected for the award this year. Miami led Division I institutions with 21 selections while Patriot League foe Bucknell tied with four other schools for second with 20. American was the next-highest out of the Patriot League.
This is only the latest in the postseason academic awards for the team after American was among the 76 Division I programs that earned the Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic Team Award.
This was the 16th consecutive team award for AU after the Eagles posted a 3.41 GPA for the fall semester.
Of the 15 student-athletes recognized, four earned their fourth-consecutive honor starting with two-time Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, senior Maura Jacobs, and Academic All-Patriot League honorees Annaka Groschinski and Rafaela Rubas. Senior Rachel Stefano rounded out the list of Eagles who earned the distinction all four years.
Senior Megan Benson and junior Kathryn Roncoroni both earned their third selection to the Academic Squad while senior Lucy Whalley, junior Jette Dieckmann, and sophomore Gabby Arata each made the list for the second time.
The final two Zag Field Hockey/NFHCA academic awards will be announced in the upcoming weeks with the Scholars of Distinction coming out on March 25 and the National Scholar-Athlete announcement on April 1.
