WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team nearly swept this week's Patriot League Player of the Week awards, as sophomore Noor Coenen (Offensive Player of the Week), senior Annaka Groschinski (Defensive Player of the Week) and senior Maura Jacobs (Goalkeeper of the Week) earned three of the four awards from the league office on Monday.
The Eagles battled for a key 1-0 overtime victory over Bucknell on Saturday to rise to a 6-4 overall record, 3-1 in the league. The Bison were, at the time, one of the two still-undefeated teams in PL play behind Boston University.
Coenen walked away with the game-winner in the final minutes of the first overtime period, picking up her own rebound after a penalty corner insertion from senior Rafaela Rubas. The Naarden, Netherlands, native continues to lead the team with 16 points off six goals and four assists, including five goals and two assists against Patriot League opponents.
Groschinski helped lead the Eagles' backline as the team picked up its first shutout of the season, allowing the Bison only four shots on goal and four penalty corners. One of the top-ranked players in Division I in assists (No. 8), she also pitched in on the offensive end with one of the Eagles' 12 shots on goal.
Jacobs also earned her first shutout of the season, 10th of her career, and walked away with four saves on the day to bring her career total up to 187. The senior keeper is currently averaging a 1.64 goals against average and a .757 save percentage.
The Eagles will return home for a pair of nonconference games next weekend against Towson (Friday, Oct. 12) and Old Dominion (Sunday, Oct.14).
