Rubas, Coenen Lead Six @AU_FieldHockey All-Patriot League Selections

Rubas, Coenen selected for 2017 Patriot League major awards

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The American University field hockey team had a league-high six student-athletes selected for the All-Patriot League First and Second Teams, including two who were recognized as major award winners, the league announced Wednesday.

Junior Rafaela Rubas brought her season full-circle as she was selected as the PL Offensive Player of the Year after also being voted as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in August. Freshman Noor Coenen joined Rubas on the PL major awards list as the 2017 Rookie of the Year, after quickly establishing herself as one of the top scoring forces in the country throughout her debut season.

Junior Megan Benson joined Coenen and Rubas on the All-Patriot League First Team while senior Haley Bowcutt and juniors Rachel Stefano and Maura Jacobs were selected to the All-Patriot League Second Team.

Voting for the All-Patriot League Team and major awards was conducted by the Patriot League's seven field hockey head coaches, who were not allowed to cast votes for their own student-athletes or themselves.

This is the third consecutive First Team All-PL nod for Rubas, who was also selected as Rookie of the Year in 2015. A leader on the field for the Eagles, Rubas tied with Bowcutt with a team-high eight assists and earned new career-bests with 12 goals and 32 points during the regular season.

Coenen has consistently ranked among the top freshmen in the NCAA during the latter part of the regular season. She leads the team and ranks second in the Patriot League with 15 goals (.833 per game) and 33 points (1.83 per game) this season. The Naarden, Netherlands, native currently ranks fifth among freshmen in Division I in goals per game, 18th overall, and sixth in points per game, 33rd overall.

Benson, a junior from Honesdale, Pa., earned her first All-Patriot League nod after helping lead AU's efforts in the midfield. She scored her first career goal against Drexel in September.

Bowcutt, a forward from Annapolis, Md., had a record-breaking regular season after she earned new career-highs across the board with 10 goals, eight assists, and 28 points. The senior led the squad's scoring efforts early in the season and has been one of the primary factors in the Eagles' league-high 141 penalty corners.

Stefano has been one of the major forces behind AU's strong defensive line, nabbing a defensive stop this season to help lead the team to five shutouts. The junior defender from Moorestown, N.J., scored her first two career goals against Lehigh (Sept. 22) and Colgate (Oct. 14), and tied her career-high with three assists for a new personal record seven points this season.

Jacobs, a junior from New Cumberland, Pa., continues to be one of the top goalkeepers in the PL with a league-leading 1.56 goals against average after five shutouts. She has nabbed 46 saves this season and allowed only 26 goals to close the regular season with a career-record .639 save percentage.

The Eagles will start the postseason on Friday as they take on Bucknell in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal at 3 p.m. in Boston. For the latest on AU Field Hockey, stay tuned to and follow the team on Twitter @AU_FieldHockey.
