CHAMPS!!! Rubas Goal Lifts AU to PL Title

BOSTONRafaela Rubas scored a goal at the 6:09 mark of the first half and the Eagle defense made it stand up through the rest of the match as American University defeated top-seeded Boston University, 1-0, in the 2016 Patriot League Championship game Sunday at New Balance Field.

The Eagles won their first league title since 2013 and will advance to the NCAA Tournament, which starts this week. AU will find out its first opponent on Sunday night at 10 p.m. when the NCAA produces its Selection Show.
Each team is now 13-6 overall on the season. Boston U. was ranked 14th nationally in the most recent coaches poll.

Rubas was voted the tournament's Most Valuable Player and joined teammates Maura Jacobs, Natalie Konerth and Rachel Stefano on the All-Tournament Team.

American earned an early penalty corner to set up Rubas' game-winner and her ninth marker of the season.

"We didn't trap it clean," said AU head coach Steve Jennings. "Sam McCormick controlled the ball and slipped it left to (Rafaela), who dribbled around the charging defender and then pushed it past the goalkeeper near side."
From there, it was up to the AU defense. The Terriers held a 6-1 edge in shots in the second half and finished the game with a 10-4 advantage. BU also held a 6-2 margin in penalty corners.
AU goalkeeper Maura Jacobs finished with six saves in earning shutouts in both matches in the tournament. The Eagles blanked Holy Cross, 1-0, in a semifinal on Friday. Jacobs now has four shutouts this season.
"We're so proud of our team today," said Jennings. "We had to dig deep to beat a tremendously tough BU team. The game had many changes of momentum and, in the end, our deep defense was able to rise to occasion time and time again."
