BOSTON -- Natalie Konerth scored with 5:41 left in the first half and a strong AU defense made the goal stand up Friday as American University edged Holy Cross, 1-0, in a semifinal of the Patriot League Field Hockey Tournament hosted by Boston University.
The Eagles, now 12-6 overall, advance to Sunday's championship match against host and top-seed Boston University at noon. The Terriers survived a scare from fourth-seeded Bucknell, but got a 2-1 win.
Konerth scored her 13th goal of the season off a penalty corner, redirecting a shot inside the right post off an assist from Samantha McCormick.
"We played a great game today against a tough Holy Cross team," said AU head coach Steve Jennings. "I was proud of how we limited their opportunities in our defensive 25 and with how aggressive we were in the circle. We will look to maintain that type of pressure as we prepare for the final."
American held a 30-4 edge in shots and a 16-3 advantage in penalty corners in the match. Ten different AU players had at least two shots each, led by five from Konerth.
Holy Cross goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante made 17 saves to keep the Crusaders (9-10) in the game, including 11 in the first half.
