WASHINGTON – Haley Bowcutt scored the lone goal for American University, but No. 14 Boston University defeated the 20th-ranked Eagles, 2-1, in a field hockey match between Patriot League leaders on Saturday.
The win brought the Terriers into a first-place tie with AU in the league standings, with each team at 5-1. Boston Univ. will win the head-to-head tiebreaker after Saturday's victory and earned the right to host next week's four-team PL Tournament.
American fell to 11-6 overall on the season, while the Terriers climbed to 12-5.
Semifinals will be on Friday afternoon, with the championship game to be played Sunday.
Senior forward Sara Martineau scored the game-winner for BU with 3:48 left in the game. The marker came on a fast-break opportunity and converted an outlet pass from Amanda Cassera.
Sophomore Kara Enoch put the Terriers ahead just 3:52 into the second half when she took advantage of traffic in front of the AU net and tipped in a pass from Cassera.
Bowcutt earned her seventh goal of the season and tied the match with 15:20 remaining. Rafaela Rubas hit a ball from outside the circle that deflected off the BU goalkeeper and went to Bowcutt.
AU had a 6-1 edge in shots in the first half and finished with a 9-5 margin. AU had all four penalty corners before halftime, with BU getting all three attempts in the second half.
Pairings for next week's Patriot League Tournament will be announced later this weekend.
