CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Scoring an overtime goal that kept American University in first place in the standings, Eagle sophomore Rafaela Rubas has earned the selection this week as the GEICO – AU Student Athlete of the Week.
Rubas, a midfielder from Vienna, Austria, also was picked as the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. She shared the league limelight with teammate Maura Jacobs, who was the Corvias PL Goalkeeper of the Week.
The Eagle field hockey team also received good news on Tuesday when it was voted to 20th in this week's National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll, making its first appearance in this year's national rankings.
Rubas knocked in the game-winner Saturday to lift the Eagles to a 2-1 comeback win at Bucknell. Her fourth goal of the season completed an AU comeback that saw the Eagles tie the score with no time left in regulation, taking advantage of three penalty corners taken with zeroes on the clock.
The win lifted American to a 7-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 mark in the Patriot League. AU has a half-game lead over Lafayette and a 1.5-game lead over defending champion Boston University, which was ranked 15th in this week's national poll.
Jacobs improved her individual record in the AU cage to 5-1 with the victory. She stopped six of seven shots against the Bison. The Corvias PL weekly award was her second of the season.
American faces a pair of non-league matches this week. The Eagles play host to Liberty on Thursday at 2 p.m. and faces Michigan State of the Big Ten Conference on Sunday at noon.
