COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rafaela Rubas and Haley Bowcutt scored back-to-back goals for American, but the Eagles fell to seventh-ranked Maryland, 6-2, in the championship game of the Terrapin Invitational field hockey tournament on Sunday.
The loss dropped the Eagles to 4-2 overall, with both losses coming to nationally ranked teams. The Terrapins improved to 4-2.
Maryland took leads of 2-0 at halftime and 4-0 in the opening 14 minutes of the second half.
Rubas scored on a penalty corner with assists from Jess Davis and Natalie Konerth with 15:43 left to put the Eagles on the board.
Five minutes later, Bowcutt scored on a deflection from a penalty corner, with Leah DiGiandomenico earning the assist, as AU halved the Terrapins' lead.
Maryland finished with a pair of goals, including a score off a penalty corner with one second left, to complete the scoring.
Maura Jacobs had a career-high 10 saves in the Eagles' net, as Maryland amassed a 25-11 edge in shots. Seven of Jacobs' saves came after halftime and the list included a save on a penalty stroke.
American travels to Holy Cross on Saturday for its Patriot League opener. The Eagles' next home match is Saturday, Sept. 24 at noon against Lehigh. AU also plays on Sunday, Sept. 25 at home against 16th-ranked Princeton in a 2 p.m. match.
