WASHINGTON – Three different players scored for American University and sophomore goalkeeper Maura Jacobs turned her first start into a shutout as the Eagles blanked William & Mary, 3-0, in a field hockey match Friday at Jacobs Field.
The Eagles improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Tribe fell to 0-2.
Haley Bowcutt scored the Eagles' first goal when a loose ball came open in front of the net. Her goal came at the 10:05 mark of the first half.
Midway through the second, Natalie Marsh and Angela Virtu set up Natalie Konerth on a penalty corner, and the AU senior put a hard shot inside the left post.
The Eagles got some insurance with 2:52 left in the game when Konerth found Leah DiGiandomenico open at the left post.
Jacobs finished with five saves against a swarming William & Mary offense. The teams matched one another in shots (11-11) and penalty corners (5-5).
Morgan Connor made seven saves in the Tribe net.
