NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Katie Lonsky registered the game-winning goal as the American University field hockey team earned a 3-2 victory over 16th-ranked Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Lady Monarchs fall to 1-1.
American was first to get on the board, as freshman Rafaela Rubas got the ball past ODU's goalkeeper at the 18:07 mark in the first half.
The Lady Monarchs scored the equalizer four minutes into the second half, capitalizing on a man-up penalty corner by Sarah Breen. Breen added another score just four minutes later during another penalty opportunity to give ODU the 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles came back for the game-tying score with under 20 minutes on the clock when sophomore Samantha McCormick deflected the ball off a penalty corner shot by junior Natalie Konerth. With 9:14 remaining, Lonsky scored off a feed from Konerth to put American ahead for good.
AU's defense stood strong against the Lady Monarchs, who outshot the Eagles 22-7 for the game. ODU was also awarded 14 penalty corners, while AU attempted just three.
Senior goalkeeper Kate McBeath had another solid effort in the cage for the Eagles, finishing the game with eight saves.
"We played an incredibly tenacious game today against an excellent ODU team," said American head coach Steve Jennings. "There were many shifts in momentum and through it all, we kept our poise and capitalized on our opportunities.
"We are proud of the team's effort and look forward to preparing for our home opener on Friday."
The Eagles begin their 2015 home slate next weekend, when they host the AU Tournament. American faces Brown on Friday, while taking on Appalachian State on Sunday. Both games are scheduled for 1 p.m. starts at Jacobs Field.
