Senior Shelly Montgomery has been named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and Head Coach Steve Jennings has been honored as the Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his career, conference officials announced Tuesday. Six Eagles were also named to the All-Patriot League teams.
Montgomery led American on both ends of the field this season, directing the Eagles offense and stepping in to support the defense during the end of the year. She ranked second on the team with 15 points and six goals, both good for ninth in the conference, and helped American post shutouts in five of its six league contests during the regular season. The senior also made her way into the program record books and currently ranks 11th all-time with 84 career points and ninth with 36 career goals. Montgomery was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week once this season and three times in her career, also earning All-League recognition in each of her four seasons at American.
Montgomery is American's sixth Offensive Player of the Year honoree and the first since Christine Fingerhuth '10 was recognized in 2010.
Jennings earns his ninth overall Patriot League Coach of the Year honor after leading the Eagles to its eighth undefeated conference season in the last 11 years and its 10th regular season title. American led the Patriot League in scoring margin (1.34), scoring average (2.46), shutouts (7), goals against average (1.12), goals scored (2.59) and goals allowed (1.18). Jennings also led the Eagles to a pair of wins over ranked opponents, including one of its best wins in program history with its 4-3 victory over then No. 2 UCONN in October.
The Patriot League also announced its All-League Teams on Tuesday, to which six Eagles were named. Joining Montgomery as a unanimous selection to the First Team is junior Grace Wilson. Wilson leads the Eagles and is sixth in the conference with 17 points and tied for fifth with eight goals on the year. She was also honored as the Defensive Player of the Week six times this season.
American had four student-athletes named to the Second Team, Carly Atchison, Ashley Dalisera, Alex McMackin and Rebecca Treharne. Atchison ranks second in the conference with a career-best seven assists this season and posted 15 points after adding four goals. Dalisera is currently sixth in the nation with a 0.796 save percentage and ranks 15th in the country with a 1.35 goals against average. McMackin earns her second career All-Patriot League honor after being named to the Second Team in 2011. The senior appeared in all 17 games with 16 starts and registered four goals with one game-winner this season. Treharne helped to anchor American's defensive unit and tallied 11 points on three goals and five assists. This is her second consecutive All-Patriot League Second Team honor.
