Joanna Barnes Named First Team All-Patriot League

March 1, 2005

WASHINGTON - American University women's basketball player Joanna Barnes (Washington, D.C./Dunbar) has been selected First Team All-Patriot League by the PL's coaches, league officials announced Tuesday.

Barnes, a 5-10 senior guard, finished the regular season as the team's leading scorer at 13.7 points per game. Barnes was also at or near the top in nearly every statistical category. She was second in minutes played (30.5/game), first in three-point field goals made (26), second in free throw percentage (71 percent), second in rebounds per game (5.3/game), second in assists (50) and third in steals (43).

In the Patriot League, Barnes finished in the top 15 in six statistical categories. She finished sixth in scoring, 11th in free throw percentage, 12th in steals per game, 12th in defensive rebounds, tied for 13th in three-point field goals made and 15th in overall rebounding.

2004-05 was a breakout season for Barnes. She transfered from Fresno State after her freshman season and averaged 7.4 points per game in her sophomore and junior seasons for the Eagles. In her senior season, she nearly doubled that output. She also became a more versatile player, moving between the two-guard and point guard spots this season.

Barnes has been a consistent scorer this season, tallying double-digits in 20 of her 27 games. She posted huge numbers in several games, including a 27-point outburst against Navy at home on Jan. 12. In addition, the eclipsed the 20-point mark three other times and had five other games with more than 15 points. Furthermore, Barnes set or tied personal bests in six of 14 statistical categories this season. On Jan. 15, Barnes' two free throws with less than 12 seconds left gave the Eagles a 49-47 victory at Lafayette.

Barnes is the Eagles only All-PL selection. She will join AU's five other seniors in leading the Eagles into a matchup with Navy in the first round of the 2005 Patriot League Tournament. AU meets the Midshipmen on Thursday, March 3, at 5:30 p.m. at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. For ticket information, please call (202) 885-TIXX.
