HAMILTON, N.Y. - American went without a field goal during the first 8:06 of the second half, allowing host Colgate to turn a 33-28 halftime lead into a 17-point advantage, and the Raiders cruised the rest of the way in a 67-45 win Sunday at Cotterell Court.
In a matchup of last season's Patriot League title game, the Eagles stayed close with the Raiders in the opening period, helped along by 13 first half offensive rebounds. Despite shooting just 32 percent, AU held leads as deep in as the 4:14 mark in the first, but a layup by Allison Lipinski and a three-pointer by Megan Ballard stretched the lead to six, 33-27. American could only muster a foul shot in the last two minutes of the half, and trailed by five at the midway point.
American struggled from the field, shooting just 31 percent overall, and from the free throw line, hitting just nine-of-23 from the charity stripe (39 percent), to fall to 3-4 in the Patriot League. Meanwhile, the Raiders' offense was hitting on all cylinders, with the hosts shooting 55 percent in the second stanza and 48 percent on the game.
American was led by Tara Williams' (Newport News, Va./Heritage) 11 points on five-of-10 shooting and Abby Lipskis' (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Collegiate) seven points and eight boards.
AU falls to 8-11 overall, 3-4 in the Patriot League. The Eagles return to action on Wednesday at home versus UMES. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
