WASHINGTON - For the ninth time in program history, the American University women's basketball team (22-10) will advance into the postseason after earning an automatic bid into the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Eagles will travel to Philadelphia to face Penn (23-6) on Friday, March 22. Time is TBA.
The Eagles return to the postseason after advancing to the program's second NCAA Tournament last year. This is their first berth into the WNIT since 2014 when the then-first-year head coach Megan Gebbia guided the team to 22-10 overall record, 14-4 in the Patriot League. Now in her sixth year at the helm, Gebbia has guided the team to four postseason appearances with two NCAA Tournaments and two WNIT berths.
American will look to make history this time around as the team enters with an 0-6 record in the WNIT since its first appearance in 1998. Of those six losses, five were by less than 10 points.
This will be the eighth meeting between American and Penn, and the first in the postseason.
AU is one of five teams that either won or tied for first place in the conference regular season. The Eagles tied with Bucknell for a share of the regular season title before falling to the Bison in the Patriot League Championship on Sunday, 66-54. American enters with an RPI of 71.
Penn also closed with the regular season title in the Ivy League before falling to Princeton in the championship.
