Carl Voted as Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Patriot League Awards. AU Women's Basketball.

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - For the seventh time in eight years, an American University women's basketball player has been selected as the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as senior Cecily Carl was awarded the honor less than a week after earning Patriot League Player of the Year.

To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshman or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor. Voting for the Women's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Academic All-Patriot League team is conducted by the League's women's basketball sports information directors.

This is Carl's first selection to the five-player Patriot League All-Academic Team, and she was joined by classmate Elina Koskimies, who also earned her first selection.

Carl is the second consecutive AU player to earn both Scholar-Athlete and Player of the Year awards in the same season after Emily Kinneston accomplished the same feat, and the third in program history after Jen Dumiak in 2014-15. She joins the ranks of Liz Hayes, Alexis Dobbs, Dumiak, Lauren Crisler and Kinneston, as the Eagles continue to dominate the league in the Scholar-Athlete honor with nine winners since 2006-07.

The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native completed her undergraduate degree in accounting last May and is currently holds a 3.89 cumulative GPA in the sports analytics and management master's program.

Koskimies, a Helsinki, Finland, native, is coming off her first pair of All-Patriot League awards after she was selected to the Second Team and All-Defensive Team last week. The finance major holds a 3.87 cumulative GPA and was selected to the Google Cloud CoSIDA All-District First Team earlier this season.

The Eagles advanced to the semifinal round in the Patriot League Tournament with a commanding 67-47 win over Lafayette on Monday. They will host Lehigh at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena on Thursday, March 14, for a spot in the Patriot League Championship on Sunday, March 17.
