Carl Selected as PL Player of the Year; Koskimies and Edwards Earn All-PL Honors

Senior Cecily Carl vs. Bucknell (3/2/2019)

WASHINGTON – American University women's basketball senior Cecily Carl has added yet another honor to her historic career as she became the fifth player in program history to be selected as the Patriot League Player of the Year, the league office announced on Friday.

Carl, who was also selected to the Patriot League First Team, is joined by classmate Elina Koskimies and freshman Jade Edwards on the all-league release. Koskimies was selected for her first postseason award as a member of both the Patriot League Second Team and All-Defensive Team. Edwards was one of the five freshmen voted onto the All-Rookie Team.

This is the second consecutive Player of the Year award for the Eagles after then-senior Emily Kinneston was selected last season during the team's run to the Patriot League title. For Carl, it is a bookend to an incredible career as she also became only the third player in program history to earn Player of the Year as a senior after being selected to the All-Rookie team.

The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native certainly made her case for the honor after she set herself apart in the record books as the only player in AU women's basketball history to earn over 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 blocks, and 100 three-point makes in her career. She is fourth in program history with 1,405 career points after breaking 1,000 earlier this season, fourth in career rebounds (722) and third in career blocks (132).

Carl also earned a single-game program record after a staggering 37-point performance during the win over Colgate on February 2. One of the leaders on the team throughout her career, she reached a new level during the latter half of the conference season, averaging a league-high 22.2 ppg over the last nine games, including six 20+ point performances.

This is Carl's fourth consecutive appearance on the league's postseason awards release. After earning a spot on the All-Rookie Team her freshman year, she was selected to the Third Team in 2017 and Second Team in 2018 alongside her Patriot League Tournament MVP nod.

For Elina Koskimies, this pair all-league honors (Second Team, All-Defensive Team) marks her first career appearance on the postseason awards release. The Helsinki, Finland, native also leaves her mark on the AU record books as one of the top three-point shooters in program history. She had one of the best runs in the country with at least one three-point make in 34 consecutive games and spent nearly the entire season ranked in the top-five in Division I for free throw percentage (.932).

This is the second major award this season for Koskimies after she was also selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team on February 21.

In what is a promising sign for the next few years, freshman Jade Edwards has become the first Eagle selected to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team since Carl earned the honor in 2016. This caps off an exciting debut season for Edwards, who has earned 16 starts throughout the season and is among the leaders on the team with 4.8 rpg, 0.6 blocks per game and 6.6 ppg. She also sits alongside Carl with a team-high .488 shooting percentage from the field.

The No. 2 seed Eagles will host the winner of the Patriot League first-round game between #7 Army West Point and #10 Lafayette for the quarterfinal round at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 11.
