WASHINGTON - American University women's basketball freshman Jade Edwards was selected as Patriot League Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Monday after a pair of career-record performances last week. This is the first conference weekly award for the Eagles this season.
Edwards led the Eagles to their first road victory of the conference season on Wednesday with a career-high 15 points during the 58-45 win over Navy. That win was also the first for AU in Annapolis since 2015.
The Chicago, Ill., native went 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line against the Mids while adding four rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
Edwards was back in double-figures on Saturday during the 61-51 win over Army West Point during National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) with 10 points off 4-for-7 shooting from the field and 2-for-5 from the line. She also added a career-high six assists and put up some key plays defensively with a career-high four blocks along with one steal.
In her combined 71 minutes of play over the two games, she gave up only three turnovers.
Edwards, who bumped up into the starting lineup during the nonconference finale against Ohio, sits alongside senior Cecily Carl with a team-high 1.0 blocks per game. Since the start of conference season, Edwards has bumped up to the No. 4 scorer on the team (9.5 ppg) and ties with senior Cecily Carl for the No. 2 spot on the boards (5.8 rpg).
The Eagles will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 16, to face Loyola Maryland at 7 p.m. in Bender Arena. For the latest on American University Women's Basketball, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_WBasketball.
