WASHINGTON– American University Athletics will once again celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, presented by official game sponsor CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, on Saturday, Jan. 12 when the Eagles play host to Army West Point.
The game, featuring the defending Patriot League champions, will be followed by a skills clinic and autograph session. Tipoff for the game is at 1 p.m.
Following the game, American's varsity women's teams - basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, and volleyball - along with the cheer and dance squads, will lead skills clinics and sign autographs for kids of all ages on the floor of Bender Arena. The clinic is free for all with a game ticket, and children are asked to wear athletic shoes for the clinic.
"Participation in sports can yield a lifetime of benefits for girls and young women," said Athena Argyropoulos, Senior Associate Athletic Director. "Skills learned now, such as leadership, teamwork and setting goals, will last a lifetime in various aspects of life's journey.
"Our student-athletes know this from experience, and by sharing it with future generations, the cycle will only become stronger."
AU Athletics is also proud to continue its partnership with official game sponsor CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield, which has been involved with this event for a number of years.

NGWSD is celebrated in all states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympian volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports.
