AU Athletics to Celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day on Feb. 3

2017 National Girls and Women in Sports Day

WASHINGTON - American University is proud to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 3, during the women's basketball game against Army West Point, sponsored by Official Game Sponsor CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield. Tipoff in Bender Arena is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Following the game, each of American's seven varsity women's teams - basketball, cross country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, and volleyball - along with the cheer and dance squads, will lead skills clinics and sign autographs for kids of all ages on the floor of Bender Arena. The clinic is free for all with a game ticket, and children are asked to wear athletic shoes for the clinic.

"Participation in sports can yield a lifetime of benefits for girls and young women," Athena Argyropoulos, Senior Associate Athletic Director at American University, said. "Skills learned now, such as leadership, teamwork and setting goals, will last a lifetime in various aspects of life's journey.

"Our student-athletes know this from experience, and by sharing it with the future generations, the cycle will only become stronger."

NGWSD is celebrated in all states with community-based events, award ceremonies and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports.  NGWSD began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympian volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports.
