BALTIMORE, Md. - A set of double-figure contributions from senior Maria Liddane, junior Kaitlyn Lewis, and sophomore TaeKenya Cleveland led the American University women's basketball team in its 61-48 win over UMBC on Wednesday.
The Eagles now rise to 4-3 overall while the Retrievers' (1-7) losing streak extends to five.
Liddane, Lewis, and Cleveland each put up 11 points to lead AU's scoring efforts while Kinneston led with 11 rebounds and five assists.
UMBC had two players in double-figures with Te'yJah Oliver (11) and Laura Castaldo (10). Lucrezia Costa brought down a team-high eight rebounds while Castaldo pitched in four assists.
Both teams had a slow start to the game, landing at a 4-4 tie after a two-minute scoring drought before hitting another three minutes without a basket. Lewis picked up the pace late in the quarter, sinking a layup and a trey to give the Eagles an 11-7 lead heading into the break.
Cleveland stepped up early in the second quarter, landing a trey and a layup to send the Eagles on a 9-2 run to build up to an 11-point lead at 20-9. A late run by the Retrievers brought them back within six, but AU maintained their lead heading into the half, 25-19.
AU had a strong start to the second half, holding UMBC scoreless in the first five minutes of the third quarter with a 9-0 run. The Retrievers were held to only four field goals in the third quarter as the Eagles built back up to a 41-30 lead.
A pair of quick three's put UMBC back within five in the first minute of the fourth quarter, but Liddane turned the momentum back around with back-to-back layups. She closed the final 10 minutes with six points followed closely by Kinneston with five.
The Eagles will return home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game against Youngstown State. Tickets for this and all AU basketball home games can be purchased by clicking here.
