Delaware Delivers @AU_WBasketball its First Loss of the Season, 72-56

Sophomore Katie Marenyi vs. La Salle (11/13/2017)

NEWARK, Del. - Late fouls plagued the American University women's basketball team on Thursday, as the Eagles registered their first loss of the season to Delaware, 72-56.

The Eagles are now 2-1 for the season as they look to continue their road swing on Monday, Nov. 20, with a visit to George Mason. The Blue Hens also land at 2-1 overall.

Senior Io Chaney led the Eagles with a career-high night, putting up 10 points off the bench. Junior Cecily Carl just missed on a double-double with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sophomore Katie Marenyi also came away with a good scoreline, shooting 3-for-3 from the field, including hitting the team's only 3-pointer of the night, and 2-for-2 from the charity stripe for a nine-point performance. She also registered two steals and three assists.

Junior Nicole Enabosi led the Blue Hens with 25 points, followed by sophomores Bailey Kargo with 15 and Samone DeFreese with 13 points. Enabosi and sophomore Abby Gonzales led the team with seven rebounds.

The Eagles kept Delaware within striking distance throughout the first half, gaining a brief lead late in the first quarter and closing the second only three points behind.

AU was unable to maintain the momentum in the third quarter, though, as Delaware pulled away with a 26-13 tally. Of those 26 points, 12 came from the free throw line as the Blue Hens shot 100 percent from the charity stripe after the Eagles picked up nine personal fouls, including a fourth for senior Emily Kinneston.

The Eagles regained some of their rhythm in the fourth quarter, keeping pace with Delaware despite Kinneston fouling out midway through the period. However it wasn't enough to overcome the 16-point deficit accrued during the third, and AU closed with the 72-56 loss.

This is the second consecutive year that Delaware delivered American's first loss of the season after the Blue Hens edged the Eagles, 56-55, in overtime last year.

AU will be back on Monday with a quick trip to George Mason for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Eagles will return home on Dec. 2 against Youngstown State. Tickets for this and all AU basketball home games can be purchased by clicking here.
