WASHINGTON – Sophomore Kaitlyn Lewis earned her second career GEICO - AU Student-Athlete of the Week recognition this week after leading the American University women's basketball team to a near-upset against Penn State, 70-65, with a team-high 16 points on Sunday, Dec. 18.
Lewis, who shot 54.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from 3-point range against the Lady Lions, currently ranks second in the NCAA for 3-point shooting percentage. The Scranton, Pa., native broke into the top-tier of the national rankings on Dec. 10 after she shot 100 percent from long-range against Hofstra. That was the second time this season that Lewis shot a perfect game from behind the arc after she went 5-of-5 during the team's 70-53 victory over UMBC on Nov. 30.
Lewis now averages 61.1 percent from 3-point range for the season, and 55.7 percent from the field. The Penn State game was the second time this season that Lewis led the Eagles in scoring, after she put up a team-high 12 points to help lift the team over George Washington, 66-61, on Dec. 7.
American travels to Michigan on Thursday, Dec. 22, for the last non-conference game of the regular season. Tipoff will be at 3:30 p.m. in the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Mich. For the latest on your Eagles, stay tuned to AUEagles.com and follow the team on Twitter @AU_WBasketball.
