The American University women's basketball team will play its
home-opener on Sunday, November 22 versus East Carolina at 2 p.m.
American (2-1) began the season on a three-game road swing,
picking up victories at Howard and Brown. In their most recent game
on Wednesday at Brown, the Eagles used a 17-0 second-half run to
take control on their way to a 64-54 victory. Junior forwards Michelle
Kirk and Liz
Leer scored career-highs with 27 and 19 points,
respectively, in the victory. The duo shot a combined 14-of-29 from
the field, and grabbed 16 total rebounds. Senior guard Nicole
Ryan also set a career-high with 10 rebounds for
American.
Kirk leads the Eagles in their first three games with 20 points
and seven rebounds per contest. Leer has averaged 14.3 points and
6.7 boards per game, and has shot a team-high 55.9 percent from the
floor.
East Carolina (3-0) comes into Sunday's contest after recording
double-digit victories in each of its three games so far in 2009.
The Pirates have defeated Charlotte, Western Carolina and
UNC-Wilmington by an average of 18 points per contest. Ashley
Clarke has led East Carolina with 19.0 points per game on 53.7
percent shooting, while Allison Spivey has contributed 15.3 ppg.
Sunday's game will be the 39th all-time meeting between the
former Colonial Athletic Association foes. The Pirates hold a 26-12
advantage, although the squads have not met since 2001. American
and East Carolina have split their 18 previous meetings in Bender
Arena.
