@AU_Wrestling Hosts Ranking Matches on Saturday

Michael Sprague wrestles an Ohio University opponent

WASHINGTON – Spots in the early season lineup for the American University wrestling team are up for grabs on Saturday when the Eagles host their Ranking Matches this Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in Bender Arena.

Admission for the event is free.

Eagle wrestlers will get their first taste of competition before a crowd on Saturday, as they are paired against teammates. The battles will go a long way to determine lineups during the early season tournament schedule, which begins on Nov. 10 at the East Stroudsburg Open.

American, which finished sixth as a team last season at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships, have three of their five NCAA qualifiers returning.

Seniors Josh Terao (133 pounds) and Michael Sprague (149) are back to compete again, and join sophomore Gage Curry (125) in attempting to return to the national championships. Also joining the Eagles for 2018-19 is junior college national champion Tanner Harvey, who won his title a year ago while at Southwestern Oregon CC.

Recent alumni with NCAA-qualifier pedigrees are also expected to compete. All-American David Terao and Jeric Kasunic, now assistant coaches for the Eagles, are on the early lineup card.

"The real opening of the 2018-19 season will be these Ranking Matches on Saturday. This allows everyone on the squad to compete in Bender Arena, which is always a fun experience.

"I'm really looking forward to one of the 149-pound matchups that will bring fifth-year senior Michael Sprague, a NCAA qualifier, against redshirt-sophomore Kizhan Clarke, who is moving up a weight. This bout should bring some great wrestling action.

"Senior captains - Josh Terao and Jack Mutchnik - will lead us in a Red vs Blue team format in this intrasquad meet, giving everyone on each team something to battle for. Everyone wants to be on the winning team… Who will it be? AU Red or AU Blue?"
