Eagles Compete at US Open

David Terao wrestles an opponent in 2016

LAS VEGAS – Assistant Coach and former NCAA All-American David Terao finished fifth last week to lead American University wrestlers at the 2018 Marine Corps US Open Freestyle Championships.

Terao, a 2016 graduate who just finished his second season as a volunteer assistant coach, won his first three matches in the 57-kilogram Senior Freestyle bracket, including a win over 6th-seeded Tim Lambert of the Sunkist Kids WC.

He lost in the semifinals, 10-0, to Daton Fix of Titan Mercury WC and lost in the consolation semifinals to 3rd-seeded Frank Perilli, 5-0. Terao blanked Brent Fleetwood of the Bison WC, 10-0, to earn fifth.

He qualified for the World Team Trials, to be held in Rochester, Minn., in May.

Current AU student-athletes also wrestled in the event.

Rising sophomore Gage Curry placed eighth in the United World Wrestling Junior Freestyle Division, going 3-3 in the 57-kilogram competition. He also will be traveling to Rochester to compete in the UWW Junior World Team Trials.

Rising sophomores Kizhan Clarke and Elijah Murphy went 1-2 at 70 kg, while rising sophomore Colin Shannon won his opener on his way to a 2-2 mark at 79 kg.
